The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Chooses Canvas to Deliver 21st-Century Teaching and Learning Experience
Cebu City, Philippines — 22 June 2017 — Canvas by Instructure (NYSE:INST) announced today that it was selected by the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) to provide an open online learning management system (LMS) for the entire institution.
USPF chose Canvas for its ability to deliver a seamless, cross-platform learning experience that will help the institution move away from traditional, classroom-based, rote learning. It will also support a wider variety of curriculum, enabling instructors to use different tools and content to make the learning experience more personalised and engaging.
“Harnessed in the right way, technology has the potential to deliver fundamental change in education just as it has in other industries,” said Lester Gastala, VP of Information Communications Technology for USPF. “Working with Canvas, we can deliver a learning experience more in line with the experiences our students have in everyday life. We can deliver mobile, flipped and distance learning coupled with collaborative classroom-based activities which reflects today's working environment.”
This new approach promises to help USPF cater to a diverse, demanding and digitally-savvy student base by offering a combination of traditional teaching methods and independent, self-directed studies. As a native cloud platform, Canvas will also enable the institution to deliver education to more students throughout the Philippines without compromising on quality.
“We’re looking forward to seeing USPF harness the power of Canvas to make significant changes to the learning experience it offers,” said Troy Martin, VP of Instructure APAC. “Canvas will allow students and educators to engage with each other in environments they’re familiar with, like on mobile or via social networks—helping improve motivation and engagement.”
USPF will roll out Canvas in a phased approach. Phase one begins in October 2017 with 2,000 students and, by spring 2018, phase two will add an additional 3,000 students. Because of its intuitive, easy-to-use interface, Canvas is known for helping teachers and students adjust quickly to a new online working environment.
“My vision for the IT department is to help make USPF a leader in education. In order for us to do that, we want to partner with leaders like Canvas,” said Gastala.
